Spirit Courts

This is not an exhaustive list of the Spirit Courts in Philadelphia, but these are the most significant and most likely to come into Storyteller-driven play with frequency.

City Spirit

Philadelphia's city spirit is an unusual one, to be sure. Bereft of the highbrow haughtiness one might expect from an god-like Shadow being, the ethereal patron of the City of Brotherly Love goes by a name that roughly translates to The Underdog. Perhaps it is because so many have indeed underestimated this spirit that it has recently come to rule the roost. But what happens when an underdog becomes the top dog?

The River Court

Defiant and durable, the River Court is perhaps the longest standing of the Spirit Courts, and one of the most unpredictable, save the location where you can generally find its denizens — along the river. The spirits of this Court tend to be smaller and less influential closer to the center of the city, and larger and more territorial, more aggressive in nature the further one gets northwest or southeast of the city, along the Delaware River.

The Industry Court

While it's true that the Industry Court truly came to power during the Ignominy of the Forgers and the height of the First Industrial Revolution, they have had a presence in Philadelphia since the 17th century, blooming with the growth of trade as the region became a vital port and an economic hub. Centuries later, Philadelphia possesses the eight largest metropolitan county in the United States. As a result, this Court's spirits are very active, and somewhat omnipresent.

The Revolutionary Court

The affectionately and colloquially dubbed "Gritty Court" was originally the Revolutionary Court and is still frequently referred to as such by many both inside and outside out it. Modern times have brought societal changes, and now that the impending promise of profound, rebuking, and sometimes violent insurrection is no longer often in Philadelphia's midst, the court has ebbed and flowed from one of unified, shared revolt to one of individual defiance.

Essentially, it went from the Court of repelling tyrants and stoking rebellion to the Court of fuck around and find out, and it is often (correctly) surmised that this Court played a prominent role in certain events of November 2020.
