Spring Courtier
I heard it said you must be tender with your sword grip, as though with a lover. This is patently false. A sword is not your lover. It is a hideous tool for separating men from their vital fluids.
—Meti's Sword Manual, Kill Six Billion Demons

Long ago there was a young woman named Saya who was the youngest daughter of a daimyo's concubine in the final days of Edo Japan. Her life was planned out for her before she could understand even a single word of any explanation of what her course was to be, and one of the first things she ever came to understand was that her opinions of that predetermined path were not to be considered and that any deviation from it was to be harshly punished. Unfortunately, fate would come to decide that the thing her heart would want more than anything else would be a dramatic deviation from that plan. The love she developed for a kabuki actor who came to perform for her family was absolutely such a deviation.

To this day, Saya doesn't know how it was that her lover made the deal that that was made in order for them to both be together. She only knows that the person she loved brought her to a strange place, telling her that a bargain had been struck by which she would remain at her lover's side until one or the other's death. The being that granted them this boon honored the letter of the promise, of course, just not the spirit of it. The actor was made into an oni and Saya into a sword, to be perpetually carried at her lover's side. The two were bound together by a curse, under which her lover would live eternally and she would remain unbroken for so long the blade of her was used to claim the life of someone innocent at least once for each turning of the moon, and as long as she was never sheathed or set down without the shedding of another's blood.

The two wandered their new master's realm for longer than either of them could reckon. Saya was only aware of the world around her when she was drawn, only able to communicate through the song of her passage through the air as she was swung, and knew little more than the warmth, the comfort, the satiety, the horror of being bathed in innocent blood.

And then came a period of surcease. She doesn't know how long her lover went without drawing her, or why. She has only a vague sense that it was longer than the usual span between conflicts and then she was drawn again, in the heat of frantic battle. The events of that fight are a blur, all other memories of it overwhelmed by the pain of both her body and her heart being broken. In a single blow, she was shattered and her wielder was cut down.

No longer a useful tool she was simply discarded, tossed back into the real world. She found that it was a world that had moved on without her, as strange to her as the place she had spent those countless decades.

A world where she was, for the first time ever, free to make her own choices.

RP Hooks

Mind the Gap Moe: Saya is tiny by modern American standards, generally the sort of woman who gets thought of as "cute", and tends toward the unassuming. That means people tend to expect certain types of attitude and behavior and are often surprised to find that reality doesn't always match up to expectations. Or even come close. To those in her circle she can be the sweetest person imaginable. To everyone else, she can be as cold and hard as steel.

夢薙の劍: Yumenagi-no-tsurugi, the dream-cutting blade, is the name that Saya was known by when she was in Arcadia. She has remained true to portions of that name since her return, and is known as a talented oneiromancer.

Broken Blade: It's often hard to miss some of Saya's disabilities, even for those who can't see through her Mask; her right arm ends about halfway to where her elbow used to be. Sometimes she wears a prosthetic, sometimes she doesn't.

VTuber: Being a virtual YouTuber means that although she's wildly famous in a very niche subculture, it's a fame that comes along with anonymity by nature since her true face is hidden behind a persona. There are only a small handful of people who know who she is in real life, and they largely have a vested interest in not betraying that trust, whether that's a financial interest, mundane contractual obligation, or magically bound pledge of secrecy. She's known for her skill at games, for her affection toward her fans, for a quick wit for insults and amusing narration, and her music, which is often ad-libbed on stream about whatever is happening on the stream at the time.

Video Games: Saya's online personality is well known in online gaming circles. Whether it's competitive games like Overwatch or League of Legends, or MMOs with PvP elements like Black Desert Online, World of Warcraft, or Guild Wars 2, she plays a lot of games and ends up being the best of the best in most of them. In MMOs in particular she's known as someone who finds joy in hunting down griefers and making their lives miserable. At the same time, she has a reputation for being fabulously patient and helpful with anyone she considers to be "her" people, whether it's her viewers, VTuber coworkers, or guild-mates.

Enthusiastic Anachronism: Despite being displaced in time, having originally come from the late days of Edo-era Japan, Saya embraces the modern world with enthusiasm. She's almost relentless in her pursuit of topics that she had no exposure to in her original lifetime, whether that's because of innovations or just exposure to cultures other than her own.

Soundtrack

Calliope Mori - Red

There's a drive to strive inside all of us
A never-ending ouroboros
Sinking way deep down and it's all because
I kept thinking that reaping is all there was and is now
I gotta find a way out, escape, how?
Fate has a funny way of shaking the weak down
Am I gonna peak now?
Future lookin' bleak, wow
Somehow incomplete after all

Demondice - You're An Ace, Kid

The road to freedom can’t be seen by downcast eyes
So raise your gaze up 'til your 10 feet tall
And shake your fist at the sky
Refuse to die or let them make you small
お前も死なない (you aren't dying either)
This one will live for tomorrow

Calliope Mori - Off With Their Heads

Cause bet this blood be melted iron but I'll still be like water
You'll get some muddied-up perspective if you senselessly slaughter
Those with devotion to the mission straight devour the weak
An ocean full of competition, get your actions to speak
You can't be strong if you give up from just a miss in your streak
I'll say so long with a slight of the scythe and a light kiss on thy cheek
おやすみ (goodnight)

The Pretty Reckless - 25

Year one was lots of fun
But nothing lasts forever in my dreams
And two, I followed you
Because you knew the way or so it seemed
And three, I still believed
That we would be becoming destiny

Description
Mask:

An extremely petite Japanese woman with cotton candy pink hair, a ready smile, cold eyes, and a right arm that ends above where her elbow once was. She walks with a distinct limp that belies the grace she also clearly has.

Mien:

Saya is a woman who became a sword, and then became a woman again after her blade was broken. The process of her making and unmaking didn't result in a woman shaped like a sword, precisely, but the signs of what she used to be are there in the blade-turned-woman, for those who know what they're looking at.

For example, while most of her is made of steel, from her lone remaining arm to her face and her torso, her eyes are a pair of rubies the color of fresh blood, which glitter almost radiantly in even the lowest light. The length of her arm is marked by the wavering line of a hamon, the tempering line along the blade of a katana, though it's also shot through with the fine lines of cracks formed from her breaking, while her legs are covered in pale, pebbled rayskin wrapped in a traditional tsukamaki — handle wrapping — pattern of silk in a violet so dark it's nearly black. That wrapping ends at bands of shakudo, an alloy of copper and gold, that ring the tops of her thighs, decorated with embellishments that change from one day to the next. The result is that her legs look like she's wearing particularly elaborate thigh-highs of some sort, though all of it is in actuality a part of her. Around her throat is the habaki, or collar, of her original blade-self, which is the same shakudo material as the rings around her thighs.

Along any of the steel surfaces of her, the parts that used to be her blade, there can often be seen faint moving images, difficult to make out without close inspection. That kind of inspection almost invariably finds glimpses of scenes of horrific abstraction, like bizarre nightmares drawn straight out of unsettled minds have been captured within her.

Mantle:

A backdrop of a spray of glittering stars when in darkness; falling blood-red maple leaves that land amidst a scattering of chrysanthemum blooms; and the distant sound of thunder and torrential downpour.
