Maddy's Wafflehouse

Log

Darren Lynch: Darren was quickly finding Maddy's to be his go-to for breakfast. A man of rituals, he arrived, found the same booth that put him facing the door, and a nice view out the window. Coffee was ordered, his breakfast order placed, and now he sat reading a newspaper as he waited. The tall man wasn't quite spread out in the booth, but at 6'4 he did a bit of it to get comfortable. His jacket was taken off and set aside, today he wore a white button up, the sleeves rolled back, with gun holsters at his sides. His hair was combed back, his face freshly shaven.

Piera Zadeh: Piera rarely moves quickly, a fact explained readily by the cane in their hand as they make their way unsteadily through the Maddy's portal. They're on the shorter side, a couple of inches past 5', and have a frail frame only partially disguised by the heavy winter coat that they're wearing. It doesn't stop their face from looking gaunt, though their eyes are alert and intelligent, and don't hesitate to look over everyone in the diner as Piera enters.

Darren Lynch: Darren's attention lifts off the paper after a moment of finishing the paragraph he was on, towards the movement at the front door. Quiet in Maddy's this early, he gave the person a nod of recognition and offered a quiet but clear, "Mornin'," before taking a swig of his coffee, still slightly too hot.

Piera Zadeh: Piera's eyes meet Darren's when he looks their way, and the greeting that they receive gets itself answered with a polite smile, a faint nod, and Piera beginning to make their way unsteadily over toward him. "Good morning," they say in a voice only very, very slightly accented, so little it could be mistaken for regional differences in American English. "It's quiet in here today isn't it?"

Darren Lynch: His own accent was thick and very much Irish. There was no hiding it really. "Aye. Jus' the way I like it," he said, folding the paper. 'Ave a seat if ya like. No poin' sitting at separate tables if i's just the two of us." He didn't seem overly friendly, but more practical than anything else.

Piera Zadeh: With a faint nod and a few moments of easing themselves down into a seat carefully, like they might lose their balance at any moment, Piera takes a seat across from Darren and rests their cane against their chair. "Where in Ireland are you from?" they ask with certainty about the accent. "Been in the States for long?" Then they seem to realize something and reach out with a gloved hand. "Name's Piera."

Darren Lynch: Darren set his coffee down and returning the handshake, his own firm but not bias one way or the other when it came to grip. "Darren Lynch, and just outsida Dublin most of it." he explained. Where the rest of it could have been was unclear. His hands, wrists and arms were covered in tattoos of gaelic imagery and uratha lore, albeit the latter was for more subtle. A few worn rings on his finger dull in the light.

Aurelio Menegi: As the pair made their introductions the portal into the diner did its portal-y thing, allowing for the ingress of a tall black-clad gentleman of a similar height to the currently-seated Blooded. Aurelio glanced about the room as he shook off the lingering oddity of that form of travel, giving those present a nod and a polite "Buongiorno," the greeting clearly of his native tongue judging by the accent used.

Piera Zadeh: With a grip that's barely there, Piera shakes Darren's hand and then draws their hand back. "I've always found it interesting how the Irish language hangs on in that country. It's heartening." They offer a gaunt smile and push their glasses, which have one arm held on with tape, back up their nose with a gloved finger. "I'm from Venezuela originally, and a linguist. My mother's indigenous tongue is slowly dying out." They turn to consider the the newcomer and then answer the greeting with a nod. "Buenos días."

Darren Lynch: He reconsiders Piera at the shake, realizing they were far weaker than he'd given them credit for. "That so? I speak 3 languages myself, but its rare to find anyone else, sides back 'ome." He brought his hand back, folding it over the other in front of his mouth, elbows resting on the table. More movement, Darren's attention split towards Aurelio, giving them a nod as well, though letting Piera do the greeting for him.

Aurelio Menegi: "Do forgive if I interrupt." He motioned between the two of them briefly before moving to find a place close enough to be in conversation range but not assuming that they wanted extra company. "Aurelio Menegi, good to meet you both."

Piera Zadeh: "I know seven," Piera says with a soft smile. "But like I said, I'm a linguist. We spoke three in my house growing up, and that's how I developed a love for them." They turn back to Aurelio once that explanation is given and start to shift further into the booth, moving the cane that's resting against the seat as they go. "No interruption, this just seems to be the public table this morning. Care to join us?"

Darren Lynch: Darren seemed open to it, gesturing to the space made my Piera across from himself. "Darren Lynch," he said with a nod towards him, waiting for him to sit if he would. A waitress came by shortly after and passed out menus, though they placed Darren's food down in front of him as he'd already ordered. He didn't seem keen on beginning to eat before them though, and focused on his coffee being refilled. "

Aurelio Menegi: "Many thanks." Aurelio took the offered seat, careful not to jostle the resting cane as he did so. He took the offered menu with a polite smile, asking for a cup of coffee of his own before mulling over his choice of meal for the morning. "Have not see you here before, I don't think...new arrivals or simply missed meetings?"

Piera Zadeh: "Oh, no thank you. I don't eat," Piera tells the waitress when they're offered a menu, holding a gloved hand up in polite refusal. They offer an introduction to Aurelio once that's done. "Piera," hey say, offering only the first name. "I come in once in a while to meet people and find conversation, but I always feel strange about it when I don't order anything. I've been here a couple of years."

Darren Lynch: "New to Maddys," he explained. "But the city itself a few months now." he set his coffee down and looked to Piera again. "You don't eat here, or a'tall?" finding the comment a touch strange. He himself was a healthy eater, in portion and in food choice. A Green Forest omelette rested below him, waiting to be devoured bite by bite.

Aurelio Menegi: "Been here about a year myself, for work and a change of view. Found good people here overall, so no complaints." He smiled a touch at that, one person in particular coming to mind, then set down his menu once his decision was made. Piera's comment was a curious one, though, and he looked to her at Darren's question.

Piera Zadeh: "I don't eat at all. I'm kind of dead," Piera says all matter of fact like it's no big deal. "I mean I can if I want to, but it's just wasteful and I don't have that kind of money." They then simply move on by asking Aurelio, "what kind of work do you do?"

Darren Lynch: Darren looked from Piera to the window with the sunlight pouring in and back, though no further comments were made on the matter. He realized there was plenty he didn't know about others within the supernatural realm. Another sip of his coffee as he leaned back and swapped his focus to Aurelio.

Aurelio Menegi: Darren wasn't the only one to spare the sunlight shining in a brief glance at Piera's answer, thinking a moment on a proper response. "How did that come about, if you wish to say?"

"Glassblowing." He said with a note of pride in his tone. "I learned the old ways in Venice and came to a studio here that carries on the work."

Piera Zadeh: "Do you want the long version or the tldr version?" Piera asks with a gentle laugh. "I don't mind answering as far as I can without violating the policies we mages have about secrecy. What kinds of things do you make, Aurelio?"

Jolene Logan: She slipped into Maddy's, dressed as she normally was, her small wardrobe largely what fit into a suitcase, wearing worn jeans, slip on shoes, a faded Fugees band shirt, and a black leather jacket that was too big for her and in a mans cut. Bright sea green eyes, too bright, and a hue not well suited for humans, flicked around before landing on Darren, her lips blooming into a smile, before curiously taking in his company.

Darren Lynch: Ever the quiet giant, Darren allowed the two to talk, content with listening and watching the back and forth. At the movement of the portal he merely settled his gaze on Jo and raised a hand for her to join them, rising briefly so she could sit against the wall and then retaking his seat at the outside.

Aurelio Menegi: The mention of what Piera was led to a metaphorical lightbulb going off above the Torrent's head, the 'ah hah' easy to see on his features. "What you are comfortable with saying, then. Would not want to pry too much."

"Depends on what is asked for. Art pieces, glasses, vases, other things." Aurelio looked towards Jolene at her entrance, giving her a nod and a polite smile. "Buongiorno."

Piera Zadeh: Piera pauses when someone new comes in and flashes a brief smile toward Jolene, but they continued with an explanation related to the topic at hand. "I stopped being wolf-blooded and became a mage when I died some years ago from spinal muscular atrophy, then came back. That process reset the clock for me a little bit on my disease, but didn't stop it, so I found a way to keep myself from continuing to slowly die by more or less making myself undead. The specifics are hard to explain."

They nod and asks Aurelio, "how long have you been doing that for?"

Jolene Logan: It seemed Darren and Jolene knew each other well enough to have a little social dancing without words, as he rose to give her the inside of the booth, which she slide into, the only sign of thanks not a word, but a finger that briefly stroked his arm when he settled back in. When Aurelio spoke a finger she lifted a hand to brush some hair behind an ear, waking up the little translator fetish tattooed on the skin behind it. Did she speak Italian? No, she spoke four languages but that wasn't one of them.

"Good morrning." She offers to the little group before falling silent and listening to the story they were in the middle of.

Darren Lynch: That revelation gave Darren a bit of surprise, still focused on Piera briefly. "Second person I've met as of lately who 'as done that.." he said, reaching for his coffee and sipping it. His food was already in front of him but untouched as of yet. "Jo, this is Piera and Aurelio. Everyone, Jo." gesturing to the petite blonde now at his side.

Aurelio Menegi: It was hard to say whether Aurelio looked impressed, concerned or both at Piera's answer, with the Torrent offering a nod after a moment. "Ah...quite the step to take. May it serve you well."

"Good to meet you." He said to Jolene with a smile that shifted to a smirk as he went back to Piera's question. "Depends on how you look at it. I apprenticed in my teens so fifteen years give or take, but that was some time ago."

Piera Zadeh: "Hi Jo, nice to meet you." Piera's English has only the slightest trace of any accent, not really enough to make it distinct to anywhere. "I would say however you look at it, Aurelio. I'm willing to accept your expert opinion on your own experience." Their head inclines slightly to one side. "Done what? Died?" they ask Darren.

Jolene Logan: "Nice to meet you both." She offers, of course she had her own accent! Though it would be had to pin point, lacking human origin, hints of first tongue weighing on her words. "It sounds like quite a story, from what I caught." She readily agrees. She doesn't bother with a menu, she pretty much always got the french toast with bacon and sausage, and finished about a third of it. She did steal a sip of Darren's coffee.

Darren Lynch: The theft of coffee got a glance, though it wasn't a mean one, it was a long one. "Oh I've met plenty of people who have died lately," he shook his head, peeling his eyes off Jo and back to Piera, "Awakened after being a blooded. Seems more common than I realized is all."

Aurelio Menegi: "I was gone from here for quite a while as the calendar goes, but for actual experience fifteen years is fitting. Growing up in the workshop I learned before then, but was not allowed to begin training until I was of the age for it."

Piera Zadeh: "Plenty of vampires visit this place, so the dead thing doesn't surprise me," Piera concurs. Their slight nod accompanies the statement. "I didn't actually know there were other mages who used to be wolf-blooded, but that doesn't surprise me terribly. I just never talked to anybody about it, that I can recall. It wouldn't surprise me at all if people who had more supernatural exposure in their earlier life tended to be more likely to Awaken, though."

Jolene Logan: She gave a sheepish grin, ducking her head down slightly. "Thirsty" using the single word as earnest explanation, though the next pass of the waitress would find her ordering her breakfast, a coffee and a water and offering the most words from her so far this morning. Her hands resting in her lap, mostly hidden in the long sleeves of the over sized jacket. The little locus of a blooded looked up to Piera "Roger." She offered the name of the other mage they knew, pulling a leg up to tuck under her.

Darren Lynch: "Does that lend then to the Awakening? Exposure to the supernatural? I'd come to understand Awakening was a predestined event. Is that not the case?"

Aurelio Menegi: Aurelio put in his own order when the server came by and took the coffee he'd already requested, taking a moment to doctor it while listening to the others with a curious look on his features.

Piera Zadeh: "Depending on who you ask there's nothing that isn't predestined. But predestined things can also be changed," Piera answers, shrugging. "I specialize in the past, rather than the future, but I have some talent with looking forward at what's likely to happen. To be entirely honest, we don't know exactly what makes some mages Awaken and other people not, though. Any more than werewolves can say exactly why some Change and others never do."

Jolene Logan: She made a thoughtful sound "There are always people who think they know the signs and ways of who will change and who won't. As if age, or birthmarks, a caul, or any other thing holds the answers, I think it's just the nature of us to try and find reason and to make it where we can, but ultimately, it's like you say, we don't know..."as if the change had been on her mind recently. Though realizing she's rambling she gives a little smile and a shrug.

Darren Lynch: "Well in the case of that, I 'ighly doubt its a lack of exposure." the unchanged blooded said simply, looking over towards the kitchen pass to see if their food was up soon.

Aurelio Menegi: "Hard to say what draws the eye of those beyond, is true." Aurelio added, taking a sip of his coffee. "Can never tell when the world will be widened for you."

Piera Zadeh: "Some mages just Awaken with no evident rhyme or reason, and most of those who are exposed to the supernatural don't." Piera continues a little bit like they're offering a lecture in a classroom and a little bit like they're just a nerd who is geeking out about their special interest. "I think it's just likely that exposure makes it more probable."

Jolene Logan: She made a little sound as she considered that and gave a nod of agreement. She did however perk up as food started making it's way over, along with her drinks, giving a pleased little chirp of sound, vocalizing not unlike animals or spirits were wont to do.

Darren Lynch: The subject seemed to have run its course. At least for him it had. "A linguist then. Do you teach or translate somewhere in town then, Piera?" He finally picked up his fork and knife, quietly eating his food in neat bites, swallowing before he'd speak again.

Aurelio Menegi: The excited chirp earned Jolene a curious look along with a small smile, with Aurelio thanking the server for dropping off his own meal before turning back to the conversation at hand. "Good skill to have, that. Still working on my English, but so far so good."

Piera Zadeh: Piera's head shakes. "No teaching. I'm eighteen and a few years dead, as far as the rest of the world is concerned. That closes a few doors, especially anywhere that's likely to look at records with any care. I do independent research and collaborate with people sometimes when they need help." They glance over at Jolene and make a curious head tilt.

Jolene Logan: And as her coffee was set down, she'd give it Darren's usually treatment, before switching it out, so he had the fresh full cup, as if to balance out the sip she took earlier, before settling in with the rest of her food. Only to realize people were watching her, and she gave a wolfish little grin, and a shrug, as if her little quirks and sounds weren't nearly as odd as they were. "Looks good." She offers, like she remembers she's suppose to say things like that.

Darren Lynch: Darren seemed to understand, "Its rare I need thin' translated but I'll keep you in mind should any work come up. Usually it's just me talkin' slower for others benefit." he said, taking another bite after and chewing purposefully.

Aurelio Menegi: "I take it getting papers for that has not been of interest for you?" Aurelio looked to Piera. "Had to do something similar myself."

Piera Zadeh: "I should probably get going," Piera says after a thought. "I do have a fake ID that gets me a little bit of leeway, but it's not the best. I just haven't been that worried about it." She pauses. Looks at Aurelio. "Do you mind letting me out? I wish I was agile enough to just climb over the seat, but I'd probably break my neck."

Jolene Logan: She looked to Darren slightly surprised. "If they're not around, I can translate anything you need." Not a list of languages, just a blanket statement as she dipped her bacon into a puddle of buttery syrup and took a bite. She looked to Piera "It was nice to meet you." She offers.

Darren Lynch: "I 'ave a contact that can get papers made. If you want a number let me know," he said quietly before looking to Jo, "What'dya mean?" he asked confused a touch

Aurelio Menegi: Aurelio nodded, moving to get up with a polite "Of course" to allow Piera egress from the table. "Was good meeting you. See you here again, perhaps."

Jolene Logan: She looked sidelong to Darren, and some how looked vaguely surprised that he didn't know or hadn't picked it up. "I've...I." Pause hunting for words, and how much she wanted to share "I've got a knack for understanding....all spoken and written languages, can't speak them back really, but I can translate any human tongue." She offers a little softly, wondering if his brain was suddenly going to start trying to replay every bit of Cant or Irish used about her.

Darren Lynch: His tongue played at a back tooth unsure whether he liked this or not. "Really. Why am I not surprised?" he sighed and looked to Aurelio. "There's not much this one can't do. Be careful around 'er," he said, going in for another bite of his food.

Aurelio Menegi: Aurelio retook his seat once Piera had made her way to the exit, smirking a touch at Darren's warning. "Is not bad thing to be...ah, what is phrase. Jack of all trades, no?"

Jolene Logan: She looked up wide eyed from under thick lashes "No, not bad." She gave a sharp little smile "And don't be fooled by Darren, there is plenty I can't do." She promises as she picks at her breakfast, each bite considered before being taken. "I make him do all the driving, I'm not terribly good at driving." As if that was what came to mind after a minute of thinking.

Darren Lynch: "I'd like to fuckin' see it," he said of these things she supposedly can't do. He looked back to Aurelio, "Friend of mine, Fi is an artist. She'd probably enjoy seeing your work."

Aurelio Menegi: "Not so good on the road either, in truth. Have a motorcycle rather than a car, little more agile just in case." Aurelio nodded, then looked back to Darren. "Murano Glassworks in South Philly, a few blocks from Geno's and all that. We have a gallery along with demonstrations at times."

Jolene Logan: She cants her head "Can you make...light shades? For the ones that dangle from ceilings?" Curiously as she eyed the man, making a thoughtful sound, clearly having something in mind.

Darren Lynch: "I'll let 'er know. She's opening a gallery here soon too. This one's going to work there as well," jutting a finger at Jo. Darren would work quietly on his food, letting them discuss.

Aurelio Menegi: "Si. Have a few times before." Aurelio nodded, his interest piqued. "Do you have something in mind?"

Jolene Logan: "I am remodeling a house...I'm not very good at it yet, but i am almost done with the living room, and I think the kitchen will be next. I was thinking of lights, I am...I'm going to put in sky lights but I also want some hanging lights." Brows knitting together as if she was trying to picture it all.

Darren Lynch: "Expensive going straight for custom work," he said, still looking at his food.

Aurelio Menegi: "Ah...very nice. Would be willing to talk on designs once you know what it should look like."

Jolene Logan: She nodded slightly "Maybe....but I'm doing almost all the labor myself..." the truth was, Jo did not have a great grasp on money, she'd never had a job, there'd always been other people to provide for her, pay for things, see to her needs. She looked to Aurelio and gave nod "We will, and price. I have no idea how much these things are or where they fall in my budget." and then of all things, she slipped a piece of bacon on Darren's plate.

Darren Lynch: He'd looked to the bacon and raise a brow at her peace offering. It was hard to tell if he'd accepted it as he continued the rest of his food first, but eventually it was brought into the fold of his breakfast.

Aurelio Menegi: "Depends on the size and design, but we can work out something. Would rather see a piece put to good use instead of gathering dust on a shelf."

Jolene Logan: She made a pleased little sound. "Do you have...." Her fingers making a little rectangle which she looked at for a moment before recalling the words "A business card." with a pleased little smile as she looked back up to Aurelio, a side long glance noting the offering had been accepted by her breakfast partner.

Darren Lynch: "Fi needs a gallery space. Maybe you could look in that area for somethin' nice. On the clock of course." he points out, wiping his lips with a napkid as he finished his breakfast.

Aurelio Menegi: "Not yet. Maybe I should, though..." He took a moment to pull his phone from his pocket, fiddling with it to access a new contact screen. "Can take your number and give mine if you'd like."

Jolene Logan: She perked up at Darren's suggestion, it was her first time having a job and earning her own money, and she appeared to be rather excited by the prospect. "I can do that, I'm very good at spaces." Who the hell knew what that meant, or if she truly was, she looked to Aurelio and nodded, before rattling off her number "Jolene" She offered the name, though truth was she answer to Jo just the same, thanks to Darren.

Darren Lynch: He leaned back, pulling out some cash for the meals, apparently covering his and Jolene's both without asking. 'I ought to be goin' soon." he said quietly.

Aurelio Menegi: Aurelio saved the name and number in his phone before giving his own, pocketing the phone once all was said and done. "Look forward to hearing from you, or seeing you if you come by. I'm there most days and live nearby if needed at other times."

He nodded to Darren, offering the Blooded a hand; if taken it was notably cold, although there didn't seem to be any other signs of bad circulation or the like, along with little knicks and cuts here and there that one familiar with bladework would recognize. "Was good meeting you."

Jolene Logan: She looked to Darren and softened a bit as she considered him, where he might be a closed book, there as no mistaking that she had a fondness for him. "I'm putting in the floor today, but I'll be around." she offers to the other blooded, before looking to the offered hand and the tiny cuts all along it, making a thoughtful sound.

Darren Lynch: Darren would shake the man's hand. "Aye. I'm sure I'll be seein' you if you're in the arts. Fi makes fast friends and she doesn't let me forget it." he rose then, leaning down and giving Jo a kiss on top of her head. "I'll come by later." He put on his coat and wandered out.

Aurelio Menegi: Aurelio watched as Darren headed out before looking back to Jolene, head tilting a touch at the sound she had made. "Something wrong?"

Jolene Logan: She looked back to Aurelio and shook her head no "No, nothing is wrong." Which was true! She'd just noted some of the details of his form and suspected there was more than just glass making going on, though with him being at Maddy's that tended to be a sure thing.

Aurelio Menegi: He nodded slowly, taking a sip of coffee before continuing. "Something you wish to ask, then?"

Jolene Logan: She seemed to be debating, she wasn't a creature of bad boundaries, but also one who didn't like to pry. The sort that would pick your wallet, just to see how your name was spelled and sneak it back, rather than ask. "Just notices the knicks on your hands..." She offers without technically asking anything. Her own hands firmly in her lap again.

Aurelio Menegi: "Ah." He took a moment to look one hand over, the blemishes on the marble - or skin, as she saw it - familiar. "Some from my work, others from other training. Among my people I serve as first defense, and learning how to use a blade well came with that."

Jolene Logan: She leaned forward slightly to eye them, before leaning back. "You are a warrior." She decides, moving to take a drink from her cup of coffee, there was something almost precise about her motions, how she took the cup with both hands, and set it back just so. Little rituals abounded in her life.

Aurelio Menegi: "One could say so. More a protector than one who seeks battle for glory alone, if you follow."

Jolene Logan: She nods "I follow, but that is still a warrior." She decides "Or so I've been told, for your people it may be different." She had no idea who or what his people were. Her plate and drink placed near the edge of the table. "....blade. A knife? Sword?" Curiously, those eyes glittering.

Aurelio Menegi: "Good a word as any." He nodded, offering her a hand so she could get a better look if she wished. "More sword, but smaller blade as well. Was trained as a grappler first but branched out from there."

Jolene Logan: She eyed the offered hand and slowly leaned forward, tentatively taking it with both of hers, and turn it this way and that to note all the little marks of a skill learned and used making a little breathy sound that wasn't quite a chuff of sound. Her own fingers bore little knicks and cuts themselves, no doubt from working on her house, the sleeves of her jacket hid most of her skin though, near swallowing her arms. "Are you good at this?"

Aurelio Menegi: Jolene would find his hand cold to the touch as she inspected it, although the chill didn't seem to bother him much if at all. "Some are better, but I can hold my own."

Jolene Logan: Where his hand was cold, her own was warm, almost too warm. She released the hand and nodded at that. "That is honest, and well said, you should wear scarves, or gloves." She decides, like she's remembering having been told the same at some point or other.

Aurelio Menegi: "It is best to know where you can improve instead of letting ego take over. That kills more often than not." He nodded, smirking at the glove comment. "They don't do much in that case, since the cold comes from within. I manage, though."

Jolene Logan: She made a mmm of sound, before her phone began to play a bar of music, grabbing it to look at it. "Aurelio, it's time for me to go, but I will be talking to you soon." She assures the man sliding out of the booth. (other scene is starting but thank you for the rp!!)

Aurelio Menegi: "Look forward to it. Was good to meet you."
