Familiar Creation Rules/Guideline

Step 1: Concept

These questions help determine what kind of entity will be your familiar, how it'll behave and what kind of powers and influence it has.

Is it a Ghost, A Spirit or a Goetia?

What is the name of your familiar? (Spirits and Goetia tend to have names that fit their in game concepts, Ghosts tend to have human names)

What is it's purpose: What kind of Spirit is it? Who was the ghost in life? What kind of idea or personification is the Goetia?

Step 2: Attributes & Advantage

You get 5 dots to distribute among Power, Finesse, Resistance if you have Familiar at 2 dots and 9 Dots if you selected a 4 dot familiar.

a 2 dot familiar has a trait limit of 5 and a 4 dot familiar has a trait limit of 7

Willpower: Resistance+Finesse (Max 10)

Essence: 10 for 2 dots familiar, 15 for 4 dots familiar.

Initiative: Finesse+Resistance

Defense: Power or Finesse (2 dot familiars pick the highest of the 2, 4 dot familiar pick the lowest)

Speed: Power+Finesse+"Species Factor" (Humanoid beings have 5, animals varies greatly, inanimate object concept have 0)

Language: Ghost familiars communicate as they did in their past lives, but often using the same speech patterns and words they most often chose.

Spirit Familiars speaks the Spirit tongue and may communicate in other ways depending on their concept. (A Cat spirit can communicate with other cats and can respond to effects that would allow someone to communicate with Cats for example)

Goetic familiars speaks human languages appropriate for where and who they came from

Step 3: Numens and Influences

Numens may be exchanged for a dot of Influence or an extra Manifestation. Each influence is capped at the Rank of the spirit. (A rank 2 fire spirit cannot have Fire 3, but might have fire 2 and fear 1)

Numina: A 2 dot Familiar gets 2 Numina and a 4 dot Familiar gets 4 Numina (Page 261 from the Mage core book has a list)

Influence: 2 dot familiars get 1 dot of Influence, 4 dots familiar gets 2. (pages 256-257 from the mage corebook explains Influence)

Ghost can only Influence their Anchors.

Spirit and Goetia Influence things that related to their concept. (A Goetia that represent the concept of bullying might have fear as an influence, a Fire spirit Could have Fire or Heat)


Step 4: Ban and Banes


These should connect to the concept and idea of the Familiar in question, when in doubt, ask in the Character creation channel.

2 dots familiar pick a ban that is simple: A Cat must chase a yarn ball, A Fire spirit must burn unattended papers, a Ghost will not approach something that is red (her murderer wore red).

4 dots familiar pick a ban that is moderate and somewhat complex: The above ghost might be forced back to twilight and be unable to manifest at the sight of bloodied clothes. The cat spirit Might lose all willpower if it doesn't attempt to trip someone carrying more than one things in their hands.

2 dots familiar pick a bane that is common: Salt thrown at the ghost will harm it, Water splashed on the Cat or fire spirit will cause them to lose corpus.

4 dots familiar pick a bane that is specific but natural: The bully goetic familiar may recoil from a folded leather belt wielded by a man, a ghost might be harmed by the knife that killed her.

Rank and Manifestation:

As mentioned in the familiar merit, 2 dot is a rank 1 entity and 4 dot is a rank 2.

Manifestation:

Goetia do not possess manifestation naturally. They require the assistance of Spirit or Death spells to gain a physical manifestation and may Possess victims through Mind magic.

Spirit and Ghost familiar begin play with the Twilight Form Manifestation and 1 more per rank (so 1 for 2 dot familiars and 2 for 4 dots familiar).
