Overview & Sources

Changelings, as individuals who have been through a tremendous amount of trauma, are not creatures who trust easily. It's difficult to remember what's real and what's not sometimes, especially when your Clarity suffers and you're trying to navigate the world, and your promises and obligations help you to remember what's real. In an out-of-character sense, the 2e Oaths system is simply not suited for a large, perpetual-world game in which players come and go, and which is not just a Changeling game.

We utilize a custom system which incorporates aspects of both the 1e and 2e Oaths systems. This is a new system as of 12/23/2022, and it is currently in playtest; the system may be In any instance where there is conflict between published rules and this page, the wiki's rules take precedence. Most of the 2e Oath types can be built in this system.

What We Use From 2e

  • Sealings are used as written in the 2e Core book with the following modifications.
    • They do not count towards a Changeling's total Oaths.
    • As we do not utilize Beats, a Changeling permitting his words to be Sealed replenishes his Glamour pool. Abusing this mechanic may cause Consequences. The Wyrd does not care for frivolous Oaths.
  • Oaths from 2e are not in use except as denoted below.
  • Bargains are in use as written in 2e. They do not count toward a Changeling's total Oaths.
  • Pupil's Oaths are still necessary, and must be built under the new system as noted below.

What We Don't Use From 2e

  • Oaths now have defined Durations.
  • When an Oath's Duration expires, the Oath completely ceases to exist. 2e had Oaths as sort of 'everlasting' no matter if they were relevant anymore, this is not the case anymore. When an Oath is over, it is no longer enforceable by the Wyrd.
  • The Expanded Pledgecraft section from Kith & Kin simply does not apply, except as specifically notated -- some aspects of the Expanded Pledgecraft are available as options in our Pledge system.

Things Which Don't Fit Either Category But Are Important

  • The marks of an expired Oath may in certain circumstances be seen with Fate Magic or by other, stranger magics. The Oath no longer exists as an enforceable entity, but its shadow or fingerprint may remain.

Terms

Oaths have the following building blocks.

Pledge Aspects

A pledge requires all four aspects. Even if one of those aspects has no rating at all, you must include it in your writeup.

  • TASKS are those things which your character promises to do or refrain from doing.
  • BOONS are those benefits bestowed by the Wyrd for your character keeping their word.
  • SANCTIONS are the penalties levied by the Wyrd should your character violate the Oath.
  • DURATION is exactly what it says on the tin: how long does the Oath last?

Each of the above aspects exists in Lesser (usually 1 or -1), Medial (2 or -2), and Greater (3 or -3) values. A valid pledge balances all of its drawbacks and benefits; when the numerical values of all elements are added together, they must equal zero.

A full writeup of most of the basic aspects may be found on p 185 of Changeling: the Lost 1e; these expansions and clarifications, where in conflict with this wiki, defer to this wiki. Custom aspect writeups are possible upon staff approval. The only aspects of 2e Pledgecraft/Expanded Pledgecraft we are utilizing are that we will accept pitches of 2e aspects/benefits for use in this system.

Task Types

The following are Tasks.

Alliances

  • Lesser Alliance (+0) - Also referred to as a peace pact, this does not obligate the parties to aid one another, simply not to hinder or actually harm one another. They aren't obligated to inform the other party of plans to harm them, to come to their aid, or anything of the like, so this task is an exception to the usual -1 for a Lesser Task. It almost never has a boon associated with it because it simply doesn't cost much.
  • Medial Alliance (-2) - The most common sort of alliance, this level requires the Oathbound to assist the other party to the best of their ability, whether offering money, resources, or a willingness to do violence, unless certain types of assistance are specifically delineated or excluded in the pledge text. It never requires a willingness to kill or die, or a willingness to permanently sacrifice Merits, resources, etc. You can't be asked to give up a limb or an eye. Staff is the final arbiter of what may be asked.
  • Greater Alliance (-3) - At this level, nothing is off the table. Allies in a Greater Allegiance must be willing to give their all: to kill, to die, to compromise who they are in preservation of the other. Significantly abrogating the ask in the text of the pledge may cause Staff to downgrade this to a Medial Alliance.

Dreams

  • Dreaming (-2) - This Task permits one or multiple parties to a pledge to enter the dreams of the other by sleeping in the same location; it permits them to bypass the other party's Bastion rating and enter into their dreams. This comes with an obligation to do so at least once per month (or once within the duration of the pledge, if shorter), and do to so when actively asked to do so: to receive the ability to enter another's dreams, you must be willing to guard them.

Endeavors

  • Lesser (-1) - Rarely difficult to accomplish. If it's something repeated, it requires very little time or effort, and if it's a single task the demand is light. Lesser endeavors include keeping a small garden patch free of weeds, or delivering a message or package from one part of town to another.
  • Medial (-2) - Medial endeavors require more time and energy than lesser endeavors, or consist of a task that could result in harm. This could include having to go through dangerous or difficult territory to deliver a message, or some sort of tedious daily chore or ritual.
  • Greater (-3) - Greater endeavors are the sort that could result in death, and take immense time and energy. Guarding an important artifact (or person) could be considered a greater endeavor, as could a long journey around the world.

Oaths & Other Supernaturals

==Can I just Fate-edit away an Oath with Fate Magic?==

You can certainly try.

You will, however, fail in the end. While you may be able to shred the original Oath itself, one of the main themes of Changeling, of Fate magic, and of this specific game is that Fate always takes its price. The penalty for tearing apart an Oath witnessed by the Wyrd will always come home to roost, one way or another.
