Maddy's Wafflehouse

Log

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: Laura loves to cook, but she also loves to eat and that second love is a way to prompt her to do some wanderings. Which in this case have bought her to Maddy's. Sprawled inelegantly in a booth she's clad in jeans and tank top, bare feet lightly resting on the floor as she works through a large steak, eyes observing the diner as the hyena relaxes and works on a crossword puzzle.

Jeremiah Hamilton: Jeremiah made his way into the diner through the portal, as you do, dressed casually in jeans and a t-shirt and sporting a pair of chunky black glasses. After a quick scan of the room revealed Laura's presence he smiled and gave her a quick salute. "Hey. How goes?"

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: She cants her head, then offers a smile in acknowledgement, leaning forward and waving a hand lightly in his direction. "Hey I know you. I saw.. here, that was it! Hello again. How are you? How's the magic? And, everything else?"

Jeremiah Hamilton: "Going pretty well all around. You?" He eyed the other side of the table that she hadn't claimed for herself and made a 'may I?' sort of gesture.

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: She nodded, gesturing a claw at it herself. "I've been bumbling about. Got lured in by the food. And did want to try to get a grasp on the magic of this place, but it's stripes to my spots, I'm starting to think."

Jeremiah Hamilton: "Can't blame you for that, the food here is fabulous." Jeremiah moved to take a seat, an eyebrow arching a bit at the 'spots' comment. "Could be. From what I know your stuff is more...not sure if specialized is the right word for it."

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: "Mm." A musing expression. "Stories and tales. A lot of what I do is because my nature matches it. For you, it's more.." Laura searches for a good term. "Science? Studying the way rules work? I might be rather wrong there though."

Jeremiah Hamilton: "In a sense, yeah. We get a look at what's behind the curtain, as it were, and can learn how to work around those universal rules in different ways."

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: "Whereas for me, it's a case of, hm. Tricks in specific ways. Like seeing through mirrors or glimpsing the future. I have wondered if we can learn from one another, but it might all come down to our natures." She taps the table, expression thoughtful.

Jeremiah Hamilton: "If anything, I assume that you guys don't have the universe smack you around if you push against the rules too far, so you've got that going for you." He replied with a small smirk, pausing to give a passing server his order before turning his attention back to Laura. "Maybe not a direct 'I teach you my thing for your thing' sort of deal, but I'd bet studying each other's workings in general could be interesting, and maybe offer some inspiration besides."

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: "Not something that happens, as such." Laura responds with a rueful smile. "There are risks, but it's safer to not mention them for us." Studying him, she taps fingers against the table. "Quite possibly, yes. We're tied to the Wryd, I suppose in a sense, you could call it the story. Archetypes."

Jeremiah Hamilton: "Fair enough." He nodded quietly. "Makes sense. And the magic you can call on comes from channeling aspects of those archetypes, in a way?"

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: "Mm.." She rubs her mouth, thinking. "Kinda, I think. But we're also them in ways ourselves. For better or worse. Part of me is.. you might call me a witch. And some stem from that."

Jeremiah Hamilton: "Right...tied to how you were reworked, I'm guessing." He looked towards Laura for confirmation on that before continuing. "We have something vaguely similar in that there are different paths one can metaphysically walk to gain the abilities we have and which path you end up with colors a number of things. We can also pull power from symbolism, using it as a focus for certain workings."

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: For a moment her expression becomes bleak, mouth twisting in anger. She exhales slowly, visibly gaining control again, though when she lifts a hand from the table there are hints of claw marks there. "Our origin wasn't like yours, but I think you know the basics at least. But yes. How we are, that affects what we can do, at least until we can start making our own choices. For us it's more a case of agreements, deals and pacts. Be careful about promising one of us something if you don't know and trust them."

Jeremiah Hamilton: Jeremiah paused as that anger flared up, giving Laura an apologetic look. "Sorry if I hit a nerve there. If I'm prying too much, please let me know."

He nodded as she continued, sitting back in his seat as he mulled over what was said. "Good advice in general. Will keep that in mind, though."

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: A slight nod. "Better than I used to be. Time was I'd have broken a chair in half. Which would likely get my ass expelled from here. But, mm, that's part of the basics." She leans back, nomming more steak. "So, with knowing how to bend the rules, what sort of things can you do? Do you have specific focuses?"

Jeremiah Hamilton: "Yeah, property damage is a big no-no." He spared a brief glance towards the rules posted up near the portal before looking back to Laura and giving a nod. "I do, yeah. With the path I walked my 'native' focuses are matters of the mind and spatial relations, and since then I've branched into other things. One focuses on seeing the truth of the world in a broader sense, letting you understand and work with the forces behind our magic from the inside along with revealing those universal truths. The other deals with elemental forces in general - electicity, light, weather, fire, that sort of thing."

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: "Hm." A curious tilt of her head. "I've some grounding with storms and lightning. I can also 'see' magic if I choose, and determine details as to its nature. Though magic in this case is very widespread a thing. It feels like your grasp of things is broader than my own, which has very specific focuses. Controlling lightning doesn't give me access to fire."

Jeremiah Hamilton: "Seems like it. We can hit some of the same notes, though, even if we're coming at it from different angles."

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: "True." A quiet hum of consideration, then a wink. "And there might be a trick or two I can do that you can't replicate. Would be interesting if the Freehold and wizards need to join efforts on something in the future."

Jeremiah Hamilton: "Very true indeed." He replied with a smirk. "That it would...can't say what would call for it off-hand, but I know at least personally I'd be more than willing to offer a hand if you and yours need it."

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: "The last time, I think, involved those rats? Though I wasn't deeply involved in that myself. I did hear about it though. It takes a major threat for us to need to join efforts."

Jeremiah Hamilton: "Me either, barring being on the research team to let the folks going in know what they were heading into. I am not built for being on the front line and I know it." He said with a small chuckle. "Mmhmm. That was impacting everyone, though, so putting our forces together made light work of dealing with it."

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: A sly grin. "I have a liking for the front line. Maybe a little too much to be healthy, but, I've learned to accept that side of myself. And agreed, a problem shared. And perhaps a demonstration to any watching us for weakness that they should reconsider. There are always those circling for a scent of blood."

Jeremiah Hamilton: "More power to you. I'm better at being the eye in the sky or making distractions to throw the other guy off than dealing with a proper fight. I can handle myself in a pinch but if I get into that position something's gone terribly wrong."

"Sad but true." He nodded quietly. "With any luck we won't need to gear up like that again any time soon."

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: "Maybe." Teeth gleam in a wicked grin. "Though I enjoy a challenge. Too much without makes me rather restless. Though I do also prefer those around me stay safe. It's.. contrary nature, maybe." She waves a hand, considering that. And everyone fights in their own way, from a distance or up close, or, numerous other ways."

Jeremiah Hamilton: "Nah, I get that. If you're not challenged you're not growing, but having the space to relax and process it in between is just as important. And very true; I tend to be more of the 'hearts and minds' sort, helping people to see the world around them in a better light and care enough to try and change it for the better."

Laura 'Hyena' Walker: A nod and she leans forward, opening her mouth to answer and venture more thoughts when her phone beeps. Checking it she pauses, offering an apologetic smile. "I would like to continue this, but I need to get my feet moving for now. I do hope to see you again, and pick this up another time if that talk interests you?"

Jeremiah Hamilton: "Definitely." He replied with a smile, taking a moment to pull a business card from its case and offered it to the departing Beast. "Feel free to drop me a line, number on the back's my cell phone."
