Maddy grew up in the Coal Region of northeast Pennsylvania, the only daughter of a coal miner and a housewife. She grew to love the wild spaces because of the beauty of the mountains where she lived, and to hate the way the modern world ground people under the heel of its boot because of the loss of her father to a mining accident when she was young. After a life of watching her mother waste away physically and spiritually trying to make ends meet, Maddy lost her too, not a year after she left for Philadelphia to go to college.

That loss was what pushed her further toward a rejection of the modern world's uncaring exploitation, both of the people that filled it and the resources that made it up. That struggle was what lead to her Awakening, and ultimately is what lead her to the Walkers in Mists, though unlike many of her Legacy she doesn't reject the modern world completely. Instead, she works to find ways to mesh the stone and steel of humanity's new world with the sustainable coexistence of ages past.

She also cooks a mean waffle.
