Jane Martingale
"You had to lie down with pain, not draw back away from it. You let yourself sort of move around the outside edge of pain like with cold water until you finally got up your nerve to take yourself in hand. Then you took a deep breath and dove in and let yourself sink down it clear to the bottom. And after you had been down inside pain a while you found that like with cold water it was not nearly as cold as you had thought it was when your muscles were cringing themselves away from the outside edge of it as you moved around it trying to get up your nerve." -- James Jones, From Here to Eternity
Overview
Appearance:
A muscular butch about 5'7" (a bit more if her hair's gelled up), Jane is usually seen in casual clothing, without sleeves if the weather will allow it. She has dark brown eyes and short black hair in an undercut, and her resting bitch face is a thing of legend (as is her death-glare, for those who've borne its brunt directly). There are usually signs that Jane's been in a fight lately visible--bruises she doesn't want to explain, old scars, her knuckles often being swollen and bruised. She carries a small black leather backpack instead of a purse.
Personality:
Jane is brusque, surly and a little bit mean on the surface, the sort of person who puts up nice thick walls to prevent people from getting too close to her. However, once you do get past those barriers, the person who she is underneath is fiercely protective of the people who are 'hers'.
Another notable trait she demonstrates is...not so much a lack of curiosity as a lack of willingness to nose into things. If her choices are between her gaining knowledge and maintaining a positive relationship, she will opt for the latter almost every time. This has led to some clashing with psychics who are bolder about demanding answers from the universe.
Jane is fantastically tactile, and you know she cares about you once she pats you on the shoulder, touches your hand or butts her forehead against your shoulder. While she doesn't go out of her way to impose contact on those who clearly would avoid it, there's signs that she's starved for connection.
Public History
- Parents died in 2008; she and Jack were sent into the care of their Aunt Marshia and Uncle Joe
- Graduated high school locally in 2013; dropped out of community college a year later
- Appeared in local underground fighting rings under the name Jade Marlowe in 2016
- Joined The Mind's Eye Society and began working at Shelf Indulgence in 2017
RP Hooks
- Hit Me Like You Did the First Time - Jade Marlowe is an up-and-coming fighter in the underground scene. She's a scrappy fighter, who seems to be built wholly of muscle and snark. She's known for a gritty street fighting style, and has been heard to say, in the past, that the reason she's not participating in more formally sanctioned events is that 'it wouldn't be fair', whatever that means.
- Guy Who Got a Headache and Accidentally Saves the World - While most members of The Mind's Eye Society are scholars of the occult, researchers or scientists, Jane approaches her membership differently, viewing herself as responsible for security for Shelf Indulgence and the Society as a whole.
- The Magician vs. The Headache - Jane is definitely not a scholar, which makes her day job working at Shelf Indulgence a little confusing to some people. But there's no mistaking the loyalty that Jane bears toward her boss and the store. Are you looking for a new romance novel, or a copy of the Voynich Manuscript? You might have the misfortune of stopping by on a day when Jane is running the shop.
- They Punctured My Yolk - Egg? Egg. Jane is slowly coming around to the realizations that she's both asexual and agender. While she's spent time in the proximity of the queer community before (thanks in part to her brother, and in part to the fact that lesbians tended to assume she's one of them due to her very butch presentation), now she's actively talking about herself and her labels, trying to figure out what all of it means to her in practice. She's up for ace meet-ups or just hanging out at a gay bar. Just be patient as she works her way around question awkwardly.
Contacts
- Devan Orsey: The old man is a constant source of exasperation and warmth in Jane's life. They've known one another for a good few years, and been through plenty of trouble together.
- Ianthe: Game recognizes game, and the respect Jane has for Ianthe is pretty strong. While they're students of entirely different disciplines, they share a warrior spirit and an attitude about keeping others safe. The fact that Ianthe's also cool to talk about asexuality and gender is also a plus.
- Jack Drexel: They've had much more than the equivalent of a formal introduction. Jade has the rare distinction of having actually hit Jack during a fight. Beyond that, there's a bond of trust forming between them, despite (or perhaps because of) little dramas along the way. A true pair of Battle Buddies.
- Jack Martingale: While once the pair were mirror images in perfect sync, now it's their differences that Jane's noticing more and perhaps enjoying more as well. Jack's been able to talk to her about topics she's afraid to face on her own, bringing his experience and perspective to the table. A bridge mended? Perhaps. Either way, younger sib Jane has Jack's back, as thanks.

"Continue", The Megas
- footprints as far as you can see
- this is who you are
- you'll always be the one
- the one to fare the storm
- if it was up to you, and you
- you know that you would lose
- if it was up to you, i know
- you'd always choose
- to continue
"Level Up", Vienna Teng
- begin again
- dynamite the dam on the flow
- your body feels the tock tock tock
- of time as it hammers
- lord, we are all cinders
- from a fire burning long ago
- but here it is the knock knock knock
- of your own heart that matters
"Lutalica", The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows
- When you were born they put you in a little box,
- and slapped a label on it.
- So they could keep things organized,
- and not have to think about what’s inside.
- Over time you learn to make yourself comfortable
- packaging your identity in different combinations
- until you feel like you belong,
- and can wear your labels proudly.
- But there’s a part of you that never really found a home
- rattling around in categories that couldn’t do you justice.
